Students often complain of the difficulties they encounter when trying to take note during their classes. This is apparently because, a high number of teachers in the teaching profession today, find it debilitating to take the whole of a classroom along when teaching to them. Thus, while some students will be able to follow up the teaching and are able to make good note from it, some students will not.

For this reason, i made this article to help students who are unable to take note in their classrooms effectively. This article contains tentative guilds that will help every student to improve his/her note taking skill and foster learning in school. So, what these guilds, that will improve effective note taking in the classroom/school?

Below are the guilds for effective note-taking in the classroom:
  1. Come early to the classroom
  2. Keep your writing materials close
  3. Listen to get main point
  4. Use abbreviations and acronyms
  5. Know when the teacher is making an instance/example
  6. Don't talk while taking note

Okay, I will explain each of these points below to give a clearer and better meaning of them. So, lets get going!

1. Come early to the classroom:

In other to be able to take note effectively in the classroom, you must concede that coming early to the classroom is very paramount. In fact, it is fundamental because without it, other guides listed here, will not be practicable.

Coming early to the classroom has a lot of benefit to a student who want to improve or take good note in the classroom. First is that it helps to keep the student relaxed, before the teacher comes in. More so, it gives the student the opportunity to get his/her writing materials prepared for taking note in the impending teaching. So you see, this point is apparently inevitable for an effective note taking in the classroom.

2. Keep your writing materials close:

Another paramount guild to help improve effective note taking in the classroom, is to make sure that the need writing materials are always close to you. This is to help you follow up the teacher when he/she starts teaching.

It is advisable (if you are in the classroom), to take your notebook and pen out of your bag, keep them on your desk or anywhere you will feel comfortable, and prepare your mind for the teaching. Though this might sound trivial, it is capable of causing you take an inconsistent and incoherent note in the classroom.

 3. Listen to get main point:

You will agree with me that, it is not everything that a teacher says during the course of his teaching, is actually part of the teaching. Because it is quite impossible to write as fast as the teacher is speaking, it is thus pertinent to note only the main points in the teaching.

Though, this might be difficult. But it can not be overruled. You must be able to get the main points during the teaching, and note them down. This will go a long way in improving your note-taking and writing skill.

 4. Use Abbreviations and acronyms:

The use of Abbreviations and acronyms is another great way to improve effective note taking in the classroom. This is because they help you save much time and stress. Take for instance, when your teacher say something like; The West Africa Examination Council is an Examination body. You can instead note that "WAEC is an examination body". Yes, it seems shorter and easier right?

That it how the frequent use of abbreviations and acronyms can help improve effective note taking in the classroom. However, it is also essential to use standard abbreviations or acronyms so that others will be able to read and understand your notebook.

 5. Know when the teacher is making an instance/example:

When taking note in the classroom, you must be able to tell whether or not the teacher is joking, teaching or making an instance of a point he raised. Note that during note taking, it is not important that you write down all the instances giving by the teacher in the course of his teaching. However, if you feel it is very important, then you can carry on.

Your ability to tell what the teacher is actually doing, it very paramount, as it will save you from the danger of writing down redundant information the teacher stated while teaching.

6. Don't talk while taking note:

Because note taking is a conscientious activity, it is advisable not to talk while taking note in the the classroom. This is because when taking note in the classroom, you are inversely doing two different tasks together (I.e listening and writing). Thus, there is an increase in the tasks, if you add talking to the tasks you are already performing. And believe me, it will be more difficult if not totally impossible to do all these things at the same time. So, talking is not advisable during note taking.

Final words:
Note taking like i said previously, is a very conscientious and tedious activity that has been a problem to students all over the world. However, I Am optimistic that this article, will to a large extent; solve this problem. All i recommend every student reading this to do, is to put the above points into practice. And for sure, there must be an increase in your note-taking skill.
